Astronaut Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. Biography

Its no surprise that there are doctors who have served as NASA astronauts. They are well-trained and particularly suited to study the effects of space flight on human bodies. Thats exactly the case with Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr., who served as an astronaut aboard several shuttle missions beginning in 1991, after serving the agency as a flight surgeon and clinical scientist. He left NASA in 1996 and is a professor of medicine and is CEO and Managing Partner of Vesalius Ventures, which invests in healthcare technologies and related companies. His is a very classic American story of aiming high and reaching amazing goals both on Earth and in space. Dr. Harris has often spoken about challenges that we all face in life and meeting them through determination and empowerment.   Early Life Dr. Harris was born on June 26, 1956, the son of Mrs. Gussie H. Burgess, and Mr. Bernard A. Harris, Sr. A native of Temple, Texas, he graduated from Sam Houston High School, San Antonio, in 1974. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Houston in 1978 before following that up with a doctorate in medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1982. Beginning a Career at NASA After medical school, Dr. Harris completed a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in 1985. He joined the NASA Ames Research Center in 1986, and focused his work on the field of musculoskeletal physiology and disuse osteoporosis. He then trained as a flight surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine, Brooks AFB, San Antonio, Texas, in 1988. His duties included clinical investigations of space adaptation and the development of countermeasures for extended duration space flight. Assigned to the Medical Science Division, he held the title of Project Manager, Exercise Countermeasure Project. These experiences gave him unique qualifications to work at NASA, where ongoing studies of the effects of spaceflight on the human body continue to be an important focus. Dr. Harris became an astronaut in July 1991. He was assigned as a mission specialist on STS-55, Spacelab D-2, in August 1991, and later flew on board Columbia for ten days. He was part of the payload crew of Spacelab D-2, conducting more research in the physical and life sciences. During this flight, he logged over 239 hours and 4,164,183 miles in space. Later, Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. was the Payload Commander on STS-63 (February 2-11, 1995), the first flight of a new joint Russian-American space program. Mission highlights included the rendezvous with the Russian Space Station, Mir, operation of a variety of investigations in the Spacehab module, and the deployment and retrieval of Spartan 204, an orbiting instrument that studied galactic dust clouds (such as those where stars are born).  During the flight, Dr. Harris became the first African-American to walk in space. He logged 198 hours, 29 minutes in space, completed 129 orbits, and traveled over 2.9 million miles. In 1996, Dr. Harris departed NASA and received a masters degree in biomedical science from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He later served as Chief Scientist and Vice-president of Science and Health Services, and then as Vice President, SPACEHAB, Inc. (now known as Astrotech), where he was involved in business development and marketing of the companys space-based products and services. Later, he was vice-president of business development for Space Media, Inc., establishing an international space education program for students. He is currently serving on the board of the National Math and Science Initiative and has served as a consultant to NASA on a variety of life-science and safety-related issues. Dr. Harris is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Aerospace Medical Association, National Medical Association, American Medical Association, Minnesota Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Texas Tech University Alumni Association, and Mayo Clinic Alumni Association. Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association. Association of Space Explorers. American Astronautical Society, a member of the board of directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Houston. My First Day Of The Internship I Was Changed The Standards...

Journal 1 The first day of the internship I was introduced to the Standards of Procedures enforced at PDGX. The entire day was devoted to the global SOP training which involved reading, presentations by respective staff and quizzes. I am now HIPPA Certified! I also attended other â€Å"scientist† specific sessions and got to know the people who were hired in the month of January. Overall, this day was devoted to documentation. Journal 2 The second session of this internship introduced me to the concept of stock valuation. Here I was assigned my first project to verify, amend and update records concerning stock options. I was also taught the concept behind stock reevaluation and its advantages before a company decides to go public. I was also introduced to methods and formulas used to track stock vesting periods. Journal 3 On the third visit, I had a briefing on the P/L project which involved restructuring the accounts to better project profitability. This reminded me of ABC as we were essentially reclassifying everything to identify cost drivers. Here I had an opportunity to work with one of the project managers. We worked on developing database elements and piloting them in excel. The most I got from this experience was the insight into the services provided by PGDX. I also got to be introduced to names of reagents sequencing activities which ultimately allowed me to grasp the fundamental process associated with the services provided by PGDX. Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution Essay To some extent I would consider todays day and age a period of renaissance, reformation, and scientific revolution. Each of these three topics can be compared in some way. However, they all also differ in some way. There are specific examples of each of these things during the renaissance period and today. The word renaissance means rebirth. In the asses to the asses, the renaissance was known as a time of creativity and change in many areas. For example, involving things political, social, economical, and cultural. During this time, people changed the ay they viewed the world and themselves. Many new ideas sparked in the renaissance period. These ideas varied from people exploring the world, a golden age in art, playwrights, a printing revolution, and Italian renaissance writers. As an example of the golden age in art, many artists used new aspects of art such as perspective, realism, lighting and shadowing, symmetry, humanism, individualism and more. I would not necessarily say that todays day and age is like this though. The renaissance period was a time of rebirth after the dark ages. However, we currently do not have something we needed to rebirth from. Still, there are constantly new ideas about many different topics from technology to home remedies. This happens without the need of a new age from a time that was dark and depressing. The reformation during the renaissance was mainly about reforming from the Catholic Church. There were people who did not believe in the ideas of the church and decided to do something about it. For example, Martin Luther, who posted the 95 Theses on the door of Wittinesss All Saints Church. People were ready for a change because the church was in corruption so they were selling indulgences, a lessening f time a soul would have to spend in purgatory, and practicing simony, the selling of church officials. There were also three popes in the church at one time so they people were confused about who was the right one. The people of the church also could not understand the Bible and when officials spoke to them because they used Latin, not vernacular, the everyday language of the ordinary people. Nowadays, people continue to turn on an institution or a practice. An example of this is when people go on strike. People do this to protest against something. This is similar to the people of the renaissance because some of them started to follow new reformers as opposed to the church. The scientific revolution of the renaissance period changed the way people viewed the universe. It brought us many advances in science and math. We know have an astronomical telescope because of Galileo Galilee. Today, there are constantly people researching and coming up with new scientific ideas Just like people in the renaissance period. However, today we are not having a scientific revolution in Just In some ways the renaissance period is similar to today. Yet, in other ways it is not, guarding the renaissance in general, the reformation, and the scientific revolution. Today, America is constantly advancing in new ideas, Just like what was taking place during the renaissance period. Part V: Extra Credit The religion of my family is not in need for reformation, however, if someone told me that their religion was in need for a reformation, I would tell them what Martin Luther did during the renaissance period. Martin Luther created the 95 Theses, or 95 arguments about the church, against indulgences. If someone were to follow in the path of Luther, one would have to write ant the basis of their new religion to be. If someone were to do this, there would most likely be many people who would oppose it. Yet, there could be people who were thinking the same thing. However, I do not know if I would necessarily tell someone to use Martin Luther as an example because times were different than they are now. Nowadays there are a lot of different religions that anyone has the right to believe in. If someone from the modern day decided that they did not like their religion, all they would have to do is switch to another one or follow their own beliefs.
